So, life has thrown you a curveball, and suddenly, you need to figure out how to make money from home. Now, what? How do you start working from home? And is it even possible to make real, legitimate money working online?

If you’ve googled how to make money online or work-from-home jobs, you’re likely feeling overwhelmed, to say the least.

You want to start working from home, but don’t have the slightest clue how. You feel uncertain and discouraged.

Well, that’s a common problem many aspiring online entrepreneurs face.

It’s perfectly natural to get frustrated!

I, myself, have felt and dwelled in that frustration for a while until I took a step back and asked myself a few questions.

Before anything, you need to know what you want out of a work-from-home job. Only then can you know which steps to take and when to take them.

Start Working from Home Guide

Ultimately, you want to make money and earn a living. But while that might be the end product, you need to really dig in and figure out what you really want out of it aside from the money.

How to start working from home - simple guide to working from home.

Do you want to make a full-time living online, or do you just want to make extra cash on the side?

Do you want the schedule flexibility that comes with a work-from-home job, or do you prefer the 9-5 setup of a regular day job?

Are you hoping to build a full-blown online business, or do you want to work on a project-by-project basis?

Answering these questions is crucial for you to decide how much time and effort you want to commit and what kind of online income stream you should choose.

Do you need to make extra cash now to pay the bills, or can you wait a while to see a substantial ROI (return on investment)?

Do you need to have recurring income every other week or every month?

What will you do with your online income — pay off debt, build an emergency savings account?

Knowing both your short-term and long-term goals will help you come up with a plan of action and will keep you motivated as you go.

A lot of people have a hard time assessing their own skills. But don’t let that stall your progress.

Start with your previous work experience. Any skillset that you can use as a remote worker?

For example, if you’ve worked in retail, sales and customer service, you can get a job as a remote sales or customer service agent.

Maybe you worked as a graphic designer before — you can start your own freelancing business as a graphic designer.

Make a list of your work experience and assign specific skills for each job position you’ve had. This will help you understand what you have to offer.

Start out a little general and then move to a more specific client.

Do you have a specific type of company or client you would like to work with?

Would you like to help small businesses, or would you prefer working with individual clients?

Then, be even more specific — who exactly would you like to work with?

Would you like to work with bloggers, coaches, influencers? Or perhaps you want to work with e-commerce owners or artisans?

Now, how can you help them? What can you do for them?

It’s not enough to simply say that you want to work with bloggers. What’s the specific niche you want to work in, and what particular tasks do you want to take on?

Example: You can offer writing services for bloggers in the yoga niche.

Be too general, and you’ll find nothing or too much of what you don’t want. Be specific, and you’ll attract the kind of clients and projects that match your goals and skills.

Starting with the skills and work experience you already have will make it easier and faster to kick the ball rolling in the right direction.

Tip: The keyword for finding a work-from-home job (or an in-person job for that matter) is problem-solving. Find what problem you can solve for someone else with your skills!

The easiest way to start working from home is to start with what you already have. But sometimes you may need to improve your current skillset or add a new skill or two.

Panic mode!! Now what?!

Don’t worry, the internet is your friend. You can now learn a new set of skills faster and easier and for less than a college education.

Now, this is where people tend to go a little overboard — I know I did! They either try to scour the internet for as much free information on the needed skills or they buy a whole bunch of online courses they never finish.

Well, luckily, you can learn from the experts all in one school — the Work-At-Home School!

You can learn specific niche-based skills, business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as productivity skills — all to prepare you to start working from home and generate a consistent online income.

This is not a course. Work-At-Home School is a school platform where you will improve your current skills, learn high-demand skills and become a more productive and effective remote worker, regardless of your niche.

What skills will you need to improve?

What other skills do you need to be successful working from home?

What resources will you need as a freelancer, virtual assistant, remote worker or online business owner?

The answers to all these questions are addressed in the Work-At-Home School.

  1. Great post! These are great steps to help make a decision on what type of work is suitable and how an individual can use their skills to work from home. My long term goal is to work from home as a full-time Blogger. At the moment I work part-time and blog part-time. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks Graham!
Same thing here – work part-time and blog part-time. Well, at least before the #stayhome orders kicked in. Now, I’m mostly working on the blog and doing client work online. It’s times like these I’m glad that I have online work & blogging to fall back on.
