Why Buy Gifts During a Pandemic?
Unfortunately, this year we all need to tighten the belt a little more than usual, but this doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t be sharing gifts.
Why should you buy gifts during a pandemic and recession?
Spirit of giving
Don’t let the pandemic kill the spirit of giving gifts. Maybe you can’t do the fancy, shmancy gifts this year, but something smaller, yet meaningful keeps the spirit alive.
After all, gift giving is not about the stuff, but about the thought and meaning.
Keeping Sense of Normalcy
This year, more than any other year before us, we all need some sort of resemblance of normal.
Giving gifts this year may help someone cope with isolation. If you give your loved ones something they really need for their business, it might be helping them with some business necessities.
Helping Businesses Survive During Tough Times
Your purchase can help keep business afloat this season. Most importantly, those small and independent businesses in your community.
Holiday purchases may help a business recover some of their losses incurred during this very tough year.
Thoughtful Shopping Alternatives
Now, every business – big or small – has taken a hit from this pandemic. That being said, smaller/independent businesses are being struck by this particularly hard.
For this reason, I encourage you to shop local and shop small business as much as possible. Here’s how you can shop this holiday:
- Local Book Shop – order a business or marketing book from your local book shop.
- Local Gift Shop – get a gift set from your local gift shop.
- Shop Local on Etsy – If your local shops don’t have a website, see if you can find them or similar small business shops on marketplaces like Etsy
- Order from a Friend Creative Entrepreneur – If you have a friend or a family member who runs a business from home, why not support them by getting a gift set from them instead of a chain-store?
- Shop Handmade & Small Business on Amazon – Amazon gets bad rep, but they do have a handmade section where independent artists and entrepreneurs sell their unique items. Also, I just saw today that Amazon also has a “Local Small Business” section where they feature small business owners and their stores. You can shop local that way too.
Gift Ideas for Entrepreneurs
With small and independent business owners in mind – which includes bloggers too – I will try my best to keep the gift ideas to something you might be able to get from your local shop’s website or a small business-focused marketplace.
Notably, electronics are more likely to be available mega chain-stores or Amazon – it’s just the nature of the beast. That being said, I’m sure there are small business shops who sell electronics somewhere in the world – If you know one in your community see if you can purchase from them instead of Walmart/Amazon.
Okay, let’s talk about gift ideas for the entrepreneurs in your life, shall we?
Noise-Canceling Headphones
Sometimes noise can be distracting during a conference call or meeting with a client. Noise-cancelling headphones are a great way to kill that distraction.
I even bought one of these headphones for my daughter for her online school this year. She loves them and says it makes a huge difference.

Wireless Ear Buds for Work
When everyone would go to school or work and I’d have the house for myself during the day, I would run videos and attend workshops with just the speakers and mic from my computer.
I didn’t see why I would need ear buds, back then; but once the lockdown kicked in this year, I quickly realized that meetings with clients were no longer private with everyone else in the house.
Wireless ear buds were the first thing I realized I needed to continue working from home – best gift I gave myself!

Boss Coffee or Tea Mug
Got a friend who’s just starting their new business? Give her a Boss mug this holiday season. She’ll love the gesture and you’ll be showing her how much you believe in her and her business.
Such a simple, yet powerful gift

A specialty coffee or tea set is a classic during the holidays, and it fits quite well with everyone, including entrepreneurs.

Productivity Planner
As a blogger and overall entrepreneur, I’m always on the lookout for the next best productivity planner. I love planning my day, projects and my tasks (completing them it’s a different story), so a great productivity planner is always welcome.
Bloggers will likely need a blogging business planner and small business owners would need a more business-based planner, with some bookkeeping pages.
One the other hand, freelance writers would be delighted with a planner that is specifically tailored to the writing process.
One planner that works for almost every entrepreneur in any industry is a project planner like the E-riches Project Planners I offer.
Here are some more planners for all niches and entrepreneurs:

A Gift Card to a Favourite Store
If you know what stores your friend likes, you can gift them with an e-gift card for that specific store.
The go-to for gift cards is usually clothing stores, but you can be a little creative and think about stores (online and offline) that can meet the needs of an entrepreneur?
No need to do research on this – this list itself gives you ideas, all you need is to find a shop any of the gifts mentioned here and see if they also offer gift-cards.
Gift an Online Course
There’s a learning curve to most of the things we need to do in our businesses, so an online course can be super helpful for a loved one who’s just starting a new online business, or a friend who need to learn a new tool for their VA business.
If you think about it, this can be double dip in supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners: When you purchase an online course from a blogger as a gift to a friend-preneur, for instance, you are not only helping your friend but also contributing to the blogger’s business with a cash influx.
Here are some online courses worth gifting:

Blog by Number
Course on how to start a blog by Start a Mom Blog.

Get Paid by Pinterest
Course on how to get paid by Pinterest by House of Brazen.

Email Marketing Course
Course teaching how to do email marketing the right way by HerPaperRoute.
A Business & Entrepreneurship Book
Reading is the best way to expand our mind as entrepreneurs and generate new concepts and ideas.
A book tailored to business and entrepreneurship would be a thoughtful and relevant gift for a friend who is starting a are business or building and expanding their skills.
Here are some great business and entrepreneurship books:
Multi-functional Laptop Desk
Why not make things much more functional for entrepreneurial spouse and gift them a multi-functional laptop desk?
Now, this one is a little more on the expensive side, but very useful.
Here are some ideas for multi-functional desks:
A Portable Document Camera
I didn’t even know these existed until this pandemic hit and I started hearing teachers talking about portable document cameras for teaching online.
It turns out it’s a super useful piece of equipment to have in any home office.
Drawing Tablet for Graphic Designers
If you have an entrepreneurial graphic design in your life, gifting them a drawing tablet is not just a simple holiday gift – it can actually help change their business in a way you can’t even imagine.
We own a drawing tablet in this house, but it is quite old in software and I’ve been contemplating upgrading it for my daughter who is now trying to set things up for her own online shop.
There are tons of drawing tablets out there and it can be confusing to pick them, so I’m sharing this great article I’ve read recently that might help.
Drawing tablet ideas:
Photography Studio Box for Photographers
Ooh, this one I want too! I’ve been wanting a studio box for product photography for years and I’m not quite sure why I haven’t just bought it already.
A photography studio box is great for taking professional product photos and even shooting flat lays.
Desk Organizer
Another one I probably should get for myself – a desk organizer. I’m embarrassed to say my desk is always messy full of papers and notes everywhere.
A desk organizer is so helpful for anyone working from home, as things do pile up quickly if there’s no organization system in place.
Idea Journal
An entrepreneur’s mind is always running, and ideas keep on popping everywhere. Having an idea journal to jot those thoughts down is a great way to stay organized and avoid losing a great new idea.
Self-stirring Coffee Mug
This one is funny and resonates with everyone. We’re tired, want coffee – but gotta stir it!
Here’s where you can find one of these:
Funny Booklet of Sticky Notes & Writing Set
A funny booklet of sticky notes can be a cute and inexpensive gift idea for entrepreneurs.
Pair it up with a writing set (think funny pen set or a note pad) would be a nice holiday gift for a freelance writer, a blogger, or an aspiring book author.
Motivational Poster
With the major rollercoaster that is entrepreneurship, you bet your friend will need an inspirational cute wall art print in their home office.
Laptop-Work Messenger Bag
As an entrepreneur, and especially in the online market, my laptop is my life’s bread and butter. I need it with the me at all times, so I can do some work wherever I go.
A laptop messenger bag is the perfect gift idea!
Motivational Card Set
If you’re an entrepreneur yourself, you know that entrepreneurs hit rock-bottom from time to time. Why not give your friend a cute motivational card set so they can remind themselves of how awesome they are?!
With the ups and downs of the pandemic, I’m probably going to grab one for myself.
Funny Pen Holder
Funny is always welcome and a freelance writer will love a funny new pen holder for their never-ending stack of pens.
Cool Paper Weight
Just as funny is always welcome, cool is never dead! A new cool paper weight in the office is sure to put a smile on your friend’s face.
Fancy or Funny Stationery Set
A stationery set is an inexpensive gift that fits almost everyone and every occasion.
Depending on how close you are with your entrepreneur friend, you can gift them a funny stationery set or a fancy one (say if you’re gifting it to your boss).
Essential Oil Kit
An Entrepreneur needs all the pampering they can get.
Why not give them an essential oil kit so they can add a touch of uplifting scents to their home office while they’re working or whine down at the end of the day with a soothing lavender scent.
A Complete Set of Washi Tape for Crafts
If your friend is a creative entrepreneur (a.k.a. owns a craft business), then giving them a complete set of cool washi tape would be a great gift idea.
The more exquisite or rare the patterns the better.
Personalized Girl Boss Journal
Instead of giving a general Girl Boss Journal, you can order a customized one on Etsy.
It’s a great personal touch and your friend will be surprised that you went the extra mile to get her something tailored to her.
Entrepreneur Pun T-shirt
Fun T-shirts are always… well funny! Pun t-shirts can lighten the mood and make for a good laugh with friends.
You can find a funny t-shirt in your favourite local shop. I would say that locally made shops will have the most creative pun t-shirts for all tastes.
Etsy is also a great place to find funny t-shirts tailored to entrepreneurs, girl bosses and the like.
There you have it.
These gift ideas are can be both useful, relevant and meaningful for a loved one who is also an entrepreneur.
Fancy any of these gifts? What re you planning to give your entrepreneur friend/loved one?
